I hope your summer is both restful and productive.
Our current contract expires in a few days and we have not yet achieved a tentative agreement for a successor contract. All provisions of the current contract continue. Where AFUM and UMS disagree on what aspects of the contract that don’t continue, we have signed an MOU. This MOU provides for payment of promotion, post-tenure salary increases and lecturer steps. Classes will commence Monday August 28, 2017.
The likely State shutdown should have no short-term impacts. Pay and benefits continue.
While AFUM & UMS have made good progress on many issues, we remain far apart on significant issues. The AFUM NT stretched as far as possible and made a package proposal that contains the absolute minimum we can agree to. UMS seeks concessions that we believe are unjustified and that we have no intention of agreeing to.
As always, the members have the final say when you vote to accept or reject any tentative agreement we reach.
While we have no more negotiating session scheduled, communication between the teams continues. If we are unable to reach a tentative agreement we will enter the next stages of the process, fact-finding and then arbitration.
A successful outcome requires that we all work together. Work-to-rule, starting at the beginning of the semester is looking more likely. AFUM will be meeting over the summer to finalize plans and to work with all of our members to secure a fair contract. You should expect an update in mid-July.
Have a happy and safe 4th!
